  Mr. Seth Carroll
World History
Hello and welcome to Mr. Carroll's social studies class. I am very excited to be working with our sixth graders and their families for the 2018-2019 school year. This is my twelfth year teaching and I am very happy to be apart of the Oberon family. I have taught social studies and special education during my time as an educator and love what I do. Our classroom will challenge, engage, and hold students to high accountability both academically and behaviorally. I have an open door policy for parents and students and always encourage all parities to email me with any questions regarding the classroom work or general concerns. Our students will be studying the western hemisphere. Students will learn the geography, history of how humans came to settle North and South America, and the cultures that developed as a result of these settelments. I have always had a passion for history and understanding how our past influences our present and future. I grew up in Minnesota and came to Colorado in 2002 to study history and psychology at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Go BUFFS! After graduating in 2006 I spent a year working with at risk youth before getting my teaching license. I have taught elementary through high school, but have spent the majority of my teaching career working with middle school students and families. When I am not at school I spend time with my wife of five years and two year old daughter. We are your typical Colorado family that loves being outdoors. Skiing, hiking, camping, hunting, rugby, playing music, Minnesota Wild hockey, and Minnesota Viking football are some of our favorite things! I know we have a lot of adjusting to do with sixth graders starting in middle school, but know we are going to set the tone for a wonderful school year!

Answers to Common Questions:

Q: What’s a Cool Down??

A: Cool Downs are daily check in problems that allow me to see where students are on the path to mastery.  They have one Cool Down problem per day Monday - Thursday (all on one piece of paper). Each day, students complete a problem about the concept taught the day before.  Each night, I give feedback. Then the following day, students collect their papers and can make improvements based on my feedback. This continues through the week with students having the opportunity to make changes daily with nightly feedback.  So students have a minimum of one opportunity to make changes to Cool Downs based on feedback, before being submitted for a final grade.

Q: What if I want some extra help?  6th Grade Math is hard!

A: Just ask Mrs. Galka between classes or through email.  We will find a time during lunch or access to meet!
