Assessments - 50% of grade book
- Measure of knowledge, understanding and skill in the subject area in relation to the standards
- Assess what students know (tests, quizzes, final projects, authentic assessments, other forms of assessment).
- In education, the term assessment refers to the wide variety of methods or tools that educators use to evaluate, measure and document the academic readiness, learning progress, skill acquisition or educational needs of students.
Content progress - 35% of grade book
- Measure of knowledge, understanding and skill in the subject area in relation to the standards.
- Content progress reflects tasks completed to demonstrate an understanding of content knowledge for in-class learning.
- If an in-class learning assignment is nearly completed in class but a student needs some extra time and completes these assignments outside of class, this would still be considered a content progress grade.
Work habits - 15% of grade book
- Work habits grades are based on student demonstration of engagement and work completion (including homework grades).
- All late work deductions are a component of the work habits category.
- Items such as parent signature pages and safety contracts will be graded in the work habits category.
- Work habits hold a range of skills that are assessed including engagement, preparation for class, meeting deadlines and due dates and utilizing class time wisely.
Extra credit policy
- If extra credit is offered by the teacher, it must be standards-related (tied to the curriculum) and will be included in the work habits section of the grade book.
Late work guidelines
- All work is expected to be submitted according to the established timeline or due date. All teachers accept late work that is instructionally current.
- Instructionally current is defined as assignments or work within the current unit of study or grading term. These assignments or work will be accepted for full credit according to the grade earned by the student.
- A student who wants to make up missing assignments at the end of the semester may not be able to make up assignments from early in the grading period if they do not meet the requirement of being instructionally current.
- A deduction in a score for late work will be reflected in the work habits category only.
Retake or redo guidelines
Students have the option of re-doing a test/project/assignment if they have not demonstrated mastery. At Oberon, this is viewed as a learning opportunity.
There are processes to be followed to redo test, project or assignment grades.
- Teachers may utilize test corrections or other processes of evidence of attainment as an opportunity for learning and teachers do not necessarily create alternate tests unless they deem that is the best way for the redo to occur.
- Students have two weeks to turn in a redo on an assignment or assessment from the date the grade is entered in the grade book. There is not an unlimited time for retakes or redos.
- The redo or retake policy allows students to demonstrate mastery of the content.
- Any assignment may not be redone once the semester has ended.
- Work habits grades may not be redone - there are no retakes on work habits grades.
Student responsibilities
- It is the responsibility of the student to communicate with the teacher regarding the preparation needed and retaking or redoing a test.
- It is the responsibility of the student to demonstrate to the teacher they have engaged with adequate preparation work before requesting a redo opportunity.
